« La Defense » is placed under the sign of modernity. Otto von Spreckelsen was the architect of the « Grande Arche » , ordered by the President Francois Mitterand. It was inaugurated on the occasion of the G7
summit and for the bicentenary of the French Revolution.
Its height closes an axis between the “Arc de Triomphe” and the Carroussel, which means that if one goes up the “Defense” he can see the “Arc de Triomphe” and the Carroussel on the same line.
La Defense is a giant 110 metres side cube which could contain the Notre-Dame with its 93 metres high arrow.
The outside walls of the site are covered with white marble from Carrare, as well as grey granite and reflecting windows. Its inside holds 115 000 square metres of offices. The roof offers one of the best views of Paris. |
